True/False/Not Given Exercise 1 – The Bike Foundry (Answers)

Answers

8. TRUE 9. FALSE 10. NOT GIVEN 11. FALSE 12 TRUE 13 NOT GIVEN 14 TRUE

Explanations

8. The Bike Foundry sells only second-hand bicycles.

Text in the passage: All our bikes are hand-restored by our team and come with a three months guarantee.

The explanation for the answer: The questions says, ‘sells only’ and the passage says, “All our bikes”, so this part is matching. Next the questions says, “only second-hand bicycle” and the passage says, “hand-restored”. Hand-restored means second hand or used bikes which have been restored to be used. Since all the parts of the question finds a match in the passage, the answer is TRUE.

Mistake students make: They search for the word, ‘second-hand’, don’t find it in the passage and conclude, it is NOT GIVEN. This is the peril of ‘keyword’ hunting.

9. All the training sessions are held at the Bike Foundry.

Text in the passage: We offer maintenance and cycle training to schools and small groups on their own premises. Additionally, we provide training to individuals and groups in our workshops.

The explanation for the answer: The question says, “All the training session are held at the Bike Foundry” whereas, the passage says, training is provided in the premises of schools and small groups in their own premises. It also says, training is provided in the workshop. So, is ‘All’ the training session held in the Foundry? No, it is not. Hence the answer is FALSE.

Mistake students make: They read only the second line, “Additionally, we provide training to individuals and groups in our workshops” and conclude the questions is TRUE.  You should always read the sentence before and after or the complete paragraph to get the answer to the question. Another important thing to keep in your mind is whenever you see words such as ALL, SOME, FEW, A FEW, MOST, MAJORITY, EVERYONE, EVERYTHING, become cautious and check if the passage says the same thing. Usage of these words in the question is always a red flag.

10. The Bike Basics course is aimed at new cyclists.

Text in the passage: This is a three-hour course which will teach you everything you need to know to keep on top of simple maintenance issues like looking after brakes and gears and how to repair a puncture. By the end of the course, you’ll know how to take good care of your bike.

The explanation for the answer: The question says, it is aimed at ‘new cyclists.’ The passage talks about what the course will teach and lists the end objective of the course. Nowhere does it say whom the course is aimed at, hence the answer is NOT GIVEN.

Mistake students make: Students look at the course content and assume that since the title of the paragraph is “Bike Basics”, the course is aimed at new cyclists. The word ‘new’ is the confusing word here. Don’t make assumptions, for a statement to be true every part of the question should have a corroborative meaning in the passage.

11. Snacks are provided for participants on the maintenance training courses.

Text in the passage: Most importantly, we have tea- and coffee-making facilities and a fridge where participants can keep their sandwiches, etc.

The explanation for the answer: The question says, ‘snacks are provided’ which means the Foundry is giving the snacks to the participants. Whereas, the passage says, participants can keep their sandwiches in the fridge. This means if the participants bring their snacks they can keep it in the fridge. So it is clear that the Foundry is not providing the snacks. Hence the answer is FALSE.

Mistake students make: There are two mistakes that students make here. They assume that since tea and coffee making machines are available, the foundry is providing the snacks. Firstly, coffee and tea are beverages and not snacks. The second mistake they make is they just read the word, ‘sandwiches’ and assume that the Foundry is providing them. Please always read the paragraph in full, understand the complete meaning of the paragraph and the question before answering them

12. Members of the Tool Club have access to cycle reference books.

Text in the passage: For £10 a year you can join our Tool Club. Membership gives you access to our workshop for one evening a week. If you want to repair your bike and know how to fix it, but lack specialist tools, then join our club. There’s a range of reference manuals available and a mechanic to offer advice.

The explanation for the answer: This is an easy one but you have to read the entire paragraph to get the answer. The first line talks about Membership of the Tool Club. The last line says, “a range of reference manuals available…” The word manual has become books in the question, hence the answer is TRUE.

Mistake students make: Students who do not know the meaning of the word, ‘manual’ tend to miss this one. Some students know only one meaning of the word ‘manual’ and that is ‘something done with the human hand’ like in manual labour. Manual has got another meaning and that is a reference book or a guide book.

13. Most of the participants on the Cycling Training courses are beginners.

Text in the passage: Our qualified instructors can teach you how to ride your bike, whether you have had prior experience or not. If you’re already riding and would like to build your confidence, we can teach you safe techniques to negotiate traffic.

The explanation for the answer: The question says, “Most of the participants…are beginners.” The passage says the instructors can teach ‘whether you have had prior experience or not.” Clearly, they will teach both the beginners and those who had learned earlier. But nothing has been told about how many participants are beginners and how many are experienced. So we cannot answer the question, ‘Are most participants beginners?” Hence the answer is NOT GIVEN.

Mistake students make: Students read the paragraph misunderstand the phrase, ‘whether you have had prior experience or not” and think the answer is TRUE. Alternatively, some other students presume that only beginners have to be taught and mark the answer as TRUE.

14. People can cancel their place on a training course one week before it begins and still get their money back.

Text in the passage: We ask for a 50% deposit to confirm your place, refundable up to seven days before the course.

The explanation for the answer: The question says, one can cancel and get their money back and the passage says the fee is refundable. Both mean the same thing. The question says cancellation can be done “one week before” and the passage says, “seven days before.” Again both mean the same. Hence the answer is TRUE

Mistake students make: This one is simple but students who do not know the meaning of the word ‘refundable’ tend to miss this one.
